WANG, LAWRENCE C. H. Radiotelemetric study of hibernation under natural and laboratory conditions. Am. J. Physiol. 224(3): 673-677. 1973.-The body temperature of hibernating Richardson’s ground squirrel (Spermophilus richardsom) was measured by radiotelemetry both in its natural habitat and in the laboratory. Under natural conditions, hibernation extended from mid-September to early March. The minimum body temperature during hibernation decreased progressively from 17.5 C in September to 2.1 C in March. The length of each hibernation bout increased from 4 to 24 days between September and mid-February, and decreased to 3 days just prior to emergence from hibernation. The rates of cooling during entry into hibernation were comparable between field (0.016 C/ min) and laboratory (0.017 C/min) animals, and frequent leveling or temporary increase of body temperature was observed during the entry period. The rates of rewarming during arousal from hibernation were also comparable in animals under field (0.14 C/ min) and laboratory (0.17 C/min) conditions. The data indicated that by using radiotelemetry, general laboratory treatments did not bias the qualitative and quantitative measurements of body temperature observed in hibernating ground squirrels under natural conditions.

Food shortage can drive body temperature regulation in wild heterothermic vertebrates

Food availability is expected to trigger hibernation and torpor (ie heterothermy) use. Yet, laboratory experiments under controlled conditions dominate, and this hypothesis remains largely untested under natural conditions. Further experimental manipulations of food availability must therefore be conducted in the wild, accounting for other covarying environmental stressors.

Cryopreservation of Smirnovia iranica (Sabeti) Seeds and Evaluation of Cryopreserved Seeds under Laboratory, Greenhouse and Natural Habitat Conditions

Smirnovia iranica (Sabeti) synonym: Smirnovia turkestana (Bunge) is a deciduous perennial bushy species of the Fabaceae (Papilionaceae) family. The species grow on sand dunes of desert areas, having a deep vertical root and very long horizontal or lateral roots. They have an important role in natural vegetation of desert and sand dune stabilization. Limited growing areas, grazing due to good pa...

Dietary fatty acid composition and the hibernation patterns in free-ranging arctic ground squirrels.

Laboratory experiments have demonstrated that the amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the diet before hibernation influences patterns of mammalian torpor. The hibernation ability of ground squirrels is greatest (longest torpor bouts, greatest number of animals entering torpor) when the PUFA content of their fall diets is 33-74 mg/g, under laboratory conditions. The extent to which ...

Cryopreservation of Ammodendron persicum (Bunge ex Boiss.) Seeds and Evaluation of the Cryogenic Seeds under Various Conditions

Ammodendron persicum (Bunge & Boiss.)is a desert shrub specie which grows on some sand dunes and sandy areas of South Khorasan and Sistan-va-Baluchestan provinces in east of Iran. Low distribution and narrow ecological range have put this species under threat. In order to evaluate the possibility of long-term preservation of A. persicum seeds in cryogenic conditions (-196°C), the seeds of speci...

Seasonal effects on egg production and level of paternity in a natural population of a simultaneous hermaphrodite snail

In a seasonal environment, the suitable time window for females to reproduce is restricted by both environmental conditions and the availability of males. In simultaneous hermaphrodites, which are female and male at the same time, selection on a trait that is solely beneficial for one sexual function cannot occur independently. Therefore, it is assumed that the optimal time window for reproduct...
